Panic at the airport!

5/27/2016

I was in California 2 1/2 weeks ago visiting family and seeing San Francisco for the first time. On my way back home, I was at the airport waiting for my flight when I heard a man in an anxiety filled voice say to an employee, "if anything happens to her it will be your fault!"

I looked up and saw a man with his young daughter. The man was pale and sweating profusely. The daughter, who was about 8 years old, was trying to reassure her dad. I asked him how could I help. He told me he wasn't able to get a hold of his wife, that the bank gave him a counterfeit $100 bill and he needed to be able to feed his daughter who had hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). I told him I was a nurse and a hypnotherapist while I assessed his daughter for signs of low blood sugar (there were none), he however was in a panic.

I asked, "if  I could help you with your anxiety, your fear, would you want me to?" as I wanted his permission before I offered to help. He said "yes".

I used EFT with him and his anxiety went from an 11 (on a 0-10 scale) to a 6 in one pass and then to a 3 with the next. There was now color in his face and the sweating ceased. He looked like a new man! He was very surprised that the EFT worked and so quickly! Knowing he was open to suggestion I said to him, "the only thing that changed was your perception and thoughts about what was happening", as he was still at the airport, still couldn't get a hold of his wife, and would eventually still need to feed his daughter and himself.

As a hypnotist I know perception is everything and was hoping to drive that home for him, so he could see how fear clouded his ability to strategize and work through his situation. He got it and confided his anxiety is why he was no longer working as a chef. Fortunately, I had my iPad with me and was able to email him a copy of the EFT handout I use so he could use the process in the future. I also gave him money so he and his daughter could get something to eat and went along my way, knowing I was able to make a difference in someone's life in such a simple way.

I share this with you as I want you to know you don't have to do something huge or grand to make a difference in the life of another person! What I did took me 10 minutes. Sharing this story also enables me to share about EFT. If you’re interested, you can use this link to learn more about how EFT works so that you too could make a difference in someone else’s life as well as your own. If you have any questions let me know. EFT can be used for fears, cravings, discomfort, nausea, heartburn, and more. A person doesn't have to believe that the EFT will work, only that they want what they're experiencing to change.

Is it personal?

We live in a culture that seems to focus on making us feeling bad about ourselves: if you're not (fill in the blank) then you're not good enough, successful enough, etc.. Instead of it being about behavior, it becomes about a character defect or flaw. In other words it becomes personal. As a result, self-loathing and shame can become constant companions stopping you from feeling capable and competent whether professionally or personally. You question your worthiness and fearful you'll be found out. Within this culture the goal becomes how not to be vulnerable, causing you to close yourself off  from deep connections so as not to be hurt, again. The problem however, is it keeps you disconnected and unable to be fully loved. Does this strike you as a wonderful way to live?

If there were another way would you be interested?

If so, it means making the commitment to open yourself unlike never before. Scary?  Absolutely! Is it worth it? Only you can answer that, but in my experience it absolutely is! But here's a caveat, you need to be thoughtful about who you choose to be vulnerable with, as not everyone is worthy of your vulnerability!

Brene' Brown in her powerful TED talks, speaks about vulnerability and shame.  These talks changed my life. I've watched them numerous times and they are required viewing for clients, as they important for anyone who wants to change their life and their thinking and imperative if you want to deepen connection and love in your life!

Each video runs approximately 20 minutes, so make an appointment with yourself and watch them. I'd be very interested in your thoughts and reaction, so email me back and let me know!

Hypnosis for weight loss!

Oprah online featured an article, 10 Ways Hypnosis Can Help You Lose Weight—For Good. Four of the 10 points are ones to keep in mind even if you're not using hypnosis:

1. The answer lies within

After 13 years I am still in awe of how the subconscious mind has all the answers you need to change what you do, how you think, and your way of being! The subconscious mind is like a huge filing system and hypnosis gives you the key to access it. The skill of a hypnotist isn't to give you the answers, but to guide you to where you can get them and to assist you in meaningfully processing them.

2. If you imagine it, it will come

Harry Potter is a perfect example of this!  When Harry was waiting for his father to perform a Patronus Spell in The Prisoner of Azkaban (SPOILER ALERT) he realized he had seen himself cast it earlier and because of that he knew he could do it now.  When you imagine doing something, fully fledged using all of your senses and do it often, it creates neuro-pathways for the behavior. What does that mean? Your body is already familiar with the behavior or response and more easily accomplishes it. Top athletes employ this technique to keep their skills sharp.

3. Two strategies are better than one

I'll add that 3 are sometimes better remembering a tripod is one of the most stable configurations.  By using a multiple approach you have more to lean on, so to speak. Clients I work with are taught, in addition to the hypnosis work we do, a self-hypnosis program to use between and after sessions. They also learn about the role of their emotions and how emotions will always trump what we think.

4. Congrats--it's a relapse

Sometimes you fall off the horse and when you do how you get back on the horse teaches you a lot if you let it!  Exploring how can let you know why you fell off, how to set yourself up for success next time, and whether additional supports are needed.

Making a relapse into something shameful or wrong stops many people from getting up after a fall.  Being kind to yourself will go a long way to achieving your goals!
