Halloween Turnips?

10/27/2015

When I was growing up Halloween was all about going Trick or Treating and dressing up in costume; I think that's what many people still associate it with.

Is that what you think of too?

So often many of us only know the "modern" meaning given holidays, terms, and events usually including some type of consumerism. In the process we lose cultural understanding and historical context. For example if you went to the grocery store in the last 4 weeks you would have seen all Halloween candy for sale. I don't know about you but it felt like I was being told I had to buy it (I haven't) and if I didn't then somehow I didn't like children.

There is more to Halloween than you might know and here is a link to Wikipedia so you can learn more about it and its origins. What you might not know is Jack-o'-lanterns were originally carved using turnips not pumpkins. Below is from Wikipedia:

In Ireland and Scotland, the turnip has traditionally been carved during Halloween,[103][104] but immigrants to North America used the native pumpkin, which is both much softer and much larger – making it easier to carve than a turnip.[103] The American tradition of carving pumpkins is recorded in 1837[105] and was originally associated with harvest time in general, not becoming specifically associated with Halloween until the mid-to-late 19th century.[106

Do you want to see some turnip carvings? Here's a link to an article urging Brits to start using turnips not pumpkins for Halloween that includes the turnips! And if you're in the area next year consider seeing the Pumpkin Carving contest in Chadds Ford, PA ; it is amazing!

In case you're interested here's a seminar being offered by a colleague just in time for Halloween----Who Ghosts Really Are: Connecting with the Other Side and Ancestors, or Halloween, Seventh Academy, look below for more details. It's being held this Thursday so if you're interested you'll need to pre-register asap!

I thought I'd add that here's something else you might not know depending upon how old you are: the origins of Cut and Paste. Before computers were used to create word documents people (me included) actually cut paper with text or a picture on it and then pasted it on another piece of paper with another set of text or picture to create the document we ultimately wanted. But we weren't done yet!  The next step was to use White Out along the edges of the pasted paper to eliminate the lines that would appear when you used a photo copier to make a finished copy (sometimes you'd need to use more White Out and make another copy) so the end result was a page that looked like it was created all in one step.

Are you a good bird?

If you are the opposite of those around you, you might feel like you don't fit in, belong, or are good enough. You may have even felt ashamed for not being "just right".

Have you ever read the book Stellaluna by Janelle Cannon?

It is the story of a baby fruit bat who tries to be the best bird she can be. Yes, a bird! She gets shamed by mama bird for behaving un-bird like and told she must eat bugs and stay in the nest right side up (the illustrations are wonderful and worth the look).

Stellaluna gets the message loud and clear she is not acceptable as she is.

Have you ever felt this way? I know I have.

While writing this, the distinction between being shamed and feeling ashamed became crystal clear---- ashamed is the personal feeling of being "bad" while being shamed is a verb, an action done to you by someone else.

Neither feels good.

What's important is to be true to who you know yourself to be.  I've been able to look back and see I've been mismatched with some people and it's this mismatch that's the issue and it is NOT personal. How we approach things and respond isn't about "good" or "bad". There are differences.

Here's to  "I'll never have to eat another bug!"  (to quote Stellaluna)

Do you know your "reallys"?

How often do you find yourself not sharing what it is you really want or need, let alone desire?

It can occur like two tracks in your mind: your inner most mind silently discussing your "reallys" and the conversation you're having with someone else where those "reallys" are missing.

As a consequence you might feel disappointed, frustrated, regret, and even angry.  You might think you want too much, have unrealistic needs, or make it really personal by thinking there's something wrong with you. However you end up feeling, staying silent is a sure-fire way for joy, happiness, and contentment to be gone from your life!

What you might not know is this also impacts intimacy and connection. When we don't make ourselves known then others really can't know who we are, can they?

Perhaps you're reading this and don't know what your needs, wants, and desires are. This is a perfect place to start! What you might not know is the work I offer assists people in uncovering these aspects of themselves which are within every person but not always as accessible as they can be!

Are you ready to know your "reallys"?

Here's to living with joy, happiness, and contentment!

What voice do you use?

10/8/2015

This morning while I was working out I watched the film The Last Samurai which I've seen several times before. This time, however, I was listening to it differently---how the movie reflected today's voice, cultural values, "healthy relationships", and what we would refer to as inner reflection. It wasn't based on the norms, customs, and traditions of the time period it was portraying. It never occurred to me to look at a film or a book, for that matter, like this.

What changed?  Listening to Chris Largent talk about his latest book Tapestry. He told the audience that it took him years to get the Voice of his characters that lived in the 11th century and how they wouldn't have been emotionally self reflective nor thought about or interpreted events the way we do now.

This led me to thinking about how we view our past with our present and the judgments we make about past (in)actions. We use a voice that isn't the one that was in existence when we made those choices or decisions.

And it is unfair to us when we do, as we didn't know what we know now. We didn't have the knowledge, understanding, wisdom, and experience we do at this moment.

To judge yourselves from the present is like portraying characters from the past, if they had the technology we have now such as cell phones, the Internet, and cars.  It doesn't make sense, does it?

So why would judging yourselves like this make any sense?

It doesn't! I suggest when you reflect on your past that you keep this in mind---you weren't who you are now.

This changes things doesn't it?

Would you notice your dreams if they walked through your door?

Whether they be dreams or experiences, do you have a specific way things need to look in order for them to "count?" Notice for a moment how much you'll miss when you do that. I was thinking of the top 3 things I wanted to do before the year was out (it is October after all):

                                       1.  Learn how to hula hoop

                                       2.  Belly dance again

                                       3.  Travel

It wasn't until this moment that I realized I've done all three; they didn't appear the way I had imagined but none the less they happened!

1.  Hula hooping---I watched someone do it and the next day I did it! I got tired which is why I stopped. I have to admit I haven't been able to repeat this feat.  Maybe I need to go onto YouTube and watch a video first!

2.  Belly Dancing---this past weekend I attended the Autumn Goddess Festival in Chester Springs, PA and dressed in my belly dancing outfit for my fun and pleasure. It so happened the Tapestry Tribal Belly Dancing  troupe from Delaware were performing there. One of the dancers was my belly dancing teacher 10 years ago and we met up at the entrance to the Festival! How perfect was that? Part of their performance was being able to dance with them. Can I share with you what fun it was! Looking back I realized it was the first time I ever belly danced in public. Here is a short video of the troupe dancing.
3.  Travel---In August I was in MA for the National Guild of Hypnotist's convention; September I was Charlotte, NC for business, in October I'll be in Chicago for another hypnosis convention, and I'm planning to be in Phoenix for business in December! Whew.

I had focused on getting a passport and then traveling but I didn't need one for any of these trips!

Here's what I suggest---have your intentions but give yourself the gift of having your sights more broadly defined so you don't miss anything that comes through your door!
