Finding yourself while getting lost

In a less than 2 weeks I will be headed to the annual hypnotist's convention in Marlborough, MA. I'm excited to see friends and meet new people, be steeped in the world of hypnosis, as well as present 3 seminars. I'm also aware I need to drive there first.

Last year's trip pinged a lot of my discomfort zones and frankly a few fears. I left 1 1/2 hours late, incorrectly rewrote the directions and missed a key highway, got lost which added 2 hours to the trip, and got caught in a thunderstorm and since my car accident 2 years ago I'm not fond of them. I had wanted to be more spontaneous and go with the flow of things, so I did my best to enjoy the pasture lands and the animals I drove by, but after an hour I checked my iPad and saw how far off course I'd gotten. Somehow I'd returned to NY state when I should have stayed in CT. Don't ask.

As I joined the 2 mile lane of traffic for my exit on Mass Pike, you guessed it, my gas gauge light went on. I knew I was low on gas but somewhere in my mind I wasn't going to pay the high price of gas in NY (did I say I passed by the gas/food stop before the Tappan Zee Bridge?) while knowing it would be higher in MA. I am reasonably intelligent, with good common sense but it wasn't evident in this moment. There's a range indicator in my car and I had 35 miles worth of gas in the tank and I was now in stop and go traffic. Did I know how far the next gas station and my exit were? Hell no. I had visions of being on the side of the highway waiting for AAA to tow my car; at least I had my AAA card with me!

A few weeks before my trip, I had told Jim that I wanted a divorce and I had this story in my mind that if I called him he wouldn't want to help me. Under this were my fears of not being able to make it on my own.  I couldn't even get to the convention I'd been going to for years so what was I thinking getting divorced???!!

I also felt incredibly alone in the world.

But I did not know anything else I could do while driving so I called Jim. He was gracious (why wouldn't he be??) and he told me what I needed to know. I think he also said to call him when I got to the hotel. On some level I also needed to connect to another human being. Armed with information and 25 more miles left in my gas tank, I continued on. When I got to my exit I knew there were gas stations right there. Before I gassed up I saw there were 4 more miles left in my tank. Whew!

When I finally got to the hotel 3 hours later than planned, I was told they didn't have my reservation. I had my confirmation number and within 10 minutes I had a room with the fridge I had requested.

What did I learn?

  • Managing your time now can reap great benefits later on
  • Recheck what you write down
  • When you need something (or your gas tank does) consider getting it when the opportunity presents itself and do not wait until it becomes urgent
  • Planning doesn't mean you get what you want, but you might stay in the right state
  • Stories you make up in your mind are just stories, get a reality check instead by asking/doing
  • Keep confirmation numbers
  • Find in the situation something you can be grateful for no matter how small
  • Know you're never as alone as you feel---reach out even when it's scary
  • I am so much stronger, able, and capable than I realize
Here's to my upcoming travels!

A mermaid's purse?

7/22/2015

I learned a new term I just love: a mermaid's purse. I heard it used on the series, Call the Midwife and it's when a baby is born en caul or in the amniotic sac. It is a very rare occurrence, about 1 in every 80,000 births, and I've attended one.

It is something to witness the birth of a baby and I've had the privilege of attending over 200. Seeing a baby emerging into the world in the 'mermaid's purse' was simply amazing. It was a first for all in the room. It was a peek into another world---how a baby lives inside the womb floating in the amniotic fluid, while being in this world, too. There are legends about the mermaid's purse---that it will keep someone from drowning and, therefore, was prized by sailors. The midwife at the birth I attended said it was a sign of good luck. All I know is I was in awe.

When's the last time you've been in awe?

Besides, birth I've been in awe watching the sun go down in an orange sky, when hearing the birds sing in the morning as more of them join in, as well as when a friend uses their courage and shares in an unexpected way. I'm also in awe of my clients when they do the work of this process and are transformed. In fact, I tell people my hypnosis work is like being a midwife, as people are in a sense giving birth to themselves.

What if you look with your heart this week and notice something with a sense of awe?

That would be awesome, wouldn't it? I'd love to hear what you find!

Do you find yourself taking on the energy or feelings around you?

Does it seem like your body is holding old emotions such as anger, fear, and sadness?

Perhaps you're looking at deepening your spiritual connection?

Maybe you've been interested in learning more about Angels and how to use their healing power to assist you in renewing and replenishing your soul?

If you answered "yes", to any of these questions then mark your calendar for Monday, July 20th, for the opportunity to attend a unique and healing event: Guided Meditation with Angels, facilitated by Alana Coppola.

At this event you’ll learn how to ground, protect, and connect to your soul self and source. During a guided meditation you will be Healing with the Energy of Angels, by releasing all that no longer serves you, and “getting the issues out of the tissues.”

Participants who are interested in holding special intention to work with the Angels during the meditation, will be introduced to the Angels Alana works with and receive an actual hands-on Angel healing.

NOTE: You don't have to have a particular spiritual or religious belief to attend.

When you pre-register online you save $5 on the event but you'll have to act now! Click here to register now!

I look forward to seeing you there! Please feel free to share this with your friends.

Are you a forward thinker?

7/8/2015

My dad told me a story from when he attended the University of Delaware in the late 1940's. He told a friend that in the future the United States was going to land on the moon. His friend thought he was crazy and they made a $1 bet.  Fast forward to July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon! My dad called his friend within the week to collect on the bet.

Are you a forward thinker? Do you find people betting against what you imagine is possible? Do you back away losing your pluck to stand up for what you believe or know?

What if your capacity for thinking outside the box exceeds those around you?  What if what you imagine is just waiting for the right person to make it happen---you?

With enough time your limiting thoughts become your inner critic, so you end up not needing other people to doubt you, you'll do it to yourself. Notice what life is like with those squelched dreams, living a life smaller than who you really are, and wondering about the road less traveled.

We just celebrated the 4th of July, Independence Day, here in the United States. First the country had to declare its independence and then pursue it.  You don't need to be at war to create your own independence from those limiting thoughts you carry. It will take more effort at the beginning as you change the thought patterns that led to the behaviors that have kept you stuck or limited. But once you pursue it your life will change! There will be unexpected outcomes, both pluses and minuses. It will require effort to blaze a new path for yourself.

You might know I believe in tribes---groups of people who are in sync with me (not necessarily in total alignment with me) for the many different aspects of my life. I have found surrounding myself with people who are doing their own blazing is so very supportive! They are a huge source of encouragement while confronting me when my fears become real in my own mind or if I'm not being honest with myself. They help me go past my comfort zones so I go beyond what I've created thus far in my life. We all need and deserve support and encouragement along the way. To believe you should or need to do it all alone won't get you very far.

To assist you on your path, I've created programs, services and products to support and encourage you along your way. If you haven't taken a look at what Hypnosis Services of Delaware has to offer you I hope you will. For your convenience use the links above.

Let's make Salad!

7/1/2015

Recently, a friend shared a story about a presentation she gave at a very large venue, where she was scheduled to speak right before lunch and after a dynamic speaker. She was left with 15 minutes to speak (on time management of all things!). When she started to speak large salad bowls came out of the kitchen. At that moment, she knew the audience would not be listening to what she had worked on and prepared. She was flustered. She was annoyed, and after she spoke, she left.

Since it wasn't my experience, I had a different outcome in my mind. I told her she could have switched gears and had her "Salad Talk"!  What if she had started with, "See, sometimes salad comes when you're not ready!”  When you have good time management skills"……. (and then launch into her prepared talk).  She loved it and said she'll remember this if ever it happens again.

Sometimes you get stuck in what you planned, and can't shift and respond on the fly. You might get stuck, angry, and sometimes hurt. When you get stuck your vision becomes tunnel vision and all other possibility goes out of the window.

Here are some tips to help you shift:

1.  Take a breath

2.  Don't take it personally

When you take something personally, you're going to be unable to take a larger view and somewhere along the way judge yourself. It will be hard to find the humor in the situation.

Here's a story about the famous cook Julia Child according to Snopes.com:

"She was cutting the poultry up (which, as I recall, was a chicken), and it slid off the table onto the floor. She picked it up and said either, "We'll pretend that didn't happen", or "Just pretend you didn't see that." She continued cutting the chicken up."

In that moment Julia made salad.

3.  Channel

Can you think of someone who could pull off? They can be someone you know personally or not. Act as if they were the one presenting not you! Be a Julia Child by acknowledging what happened, pick the chicken up and keep going!

4.  Know you're human and things happen

Most likely you're the hardest person on yourself. STOP! It will only keep you stuck.

Here's to your next serving of salad!
