Obligation is very different from the freedom to choose. It’s also different from having a responsibility; I think of responsibility as the ability to respond which has a neutral tone to it. Obligation on the other hand feels like an unwanted intrusion on your time and/or energy. Take a moment to think about the groups/communities you’re a part of (this can include events as well) ---do they cause you to feel energized or is your desire/interest less than optimal? If it was the latter, you just stumbled upon an obligation.
I’m not proposing to judge whether one is better than the other, my intention is to bring awareness to what brings meaning and energy or depletes or diminishes your life. Where, how and with whom you spend your time is a big influence. By taking an objective look at these things, you have a way to revitalize your life bringing in more fun, enjoyment, and passion!
When I was in Delaware I had both types of communities, too. I found when my interests or work changed new communities opened themselves to me. I didn’t always know, however, how to navigate the obligation types. My biggest concern was would I somehow disappoint if I changed my membership or commitment status. Under lying that was my deeper fear I wouldn’t be liked or loved.
Living here in Tucson has required that I create new communities. I am thoughtful now, about my choices, keeping in mind my past experiences and my current intentions. As a result I am now a member of a dance/movement community that meets 3 times a week and I just love it! It’s in ink on my calendar not pencil and on my phone calendar; this is how vital and energizing my being there is to me.
Here’s to filling your life with (more) joy, fun, and passion!
