Whether you have an ‘inny’ or ‘outy’, you’ve got one. I’ve been blessed to attend over 200 births and have witnessed the moment when a baby is un-tethered from the mom and their belly button is one step closer to being formed.
In Japan, the umbilical cord stumps that fall off (usually in the first week after birth) are kept and given to a child when they are older. A friend of mine’s mother gave it to her in a special box that she has kept all of her life. I have one of my children’s, and since I don’t know whose it is, I’ve kept it. It has become a symbol of our inter-relatedness and connection, a reminder that we are connected to something bigger, a part of the Whole.
Who knew belly buttons could tell you so much?
If you think about it, belly buttons are indicators that right from the start we’ve been wired for a connection that provides nourishment, belonging and life itself. As you go through life, you learn that not all connections will provide you with what you want or need, but instead may simply highlight aspects of yourself that are important or essential.
Another interesting note is that your belly button is located floating above your gut, a place associated with (gut) feelings and (gut) knowing, both of which are connections to your inner awareness. One more sign that we are connected beings.
Ponder these thoughts the next time you see your belly button. You’ll never see it or another the same way!
If you are experiencing any feelings of disconnection, I invite you to set up a Discovery Session to reconnect yourself.
