Bootstraps, context, and perceptions

Have you ever heard the saying: “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”? Does it sound like something easy or not? To me it came across as easy to do so, for example, you’re down on your luck? Pull yourself up by your bootstraps! Like a male friend put it – “man up”.

How do you hear it?

Have you ever put on a pair of boots that have bootstraps? I recently bought a pair of cowboy boots with straps and let me tell you the straps are there as you wouldn’t be able to put the boots on without them. These boots are made to be formed fitting and snug. There are devices to help put them on and take them off and personally I’m ready to get the one to take them off as its work getting them off.

What about other sayings you’ve heard that you might not have a context for but don’t realize it?

If you lived in Texas or Montana maybe you’d understand the boot difficulty but in the northeast (or if you don’t ride horses) you could lack the context to appreciate the work involved. When you don’t have the context it is really easy to misunderstand what’s being communicated or like sound bites that are taken out of context and their meaning influenced by whoever created it.

Perceptions are like sound bites. Knowing the context, where they originated from, can help you understand what they’re based on and then whether or not they apply to you now. The subconscious mind is filled with perceptions and relating to them as a sound bite is an easier way to see your perceptions as a context you bring to a situation and not necessarily the situation itself.

Imagine the shift this could make in your life.

Did you know this is how I use hypnosis with clients? By deeply understanding the emotional impact perceptions have on your life and actions you can change reaction patterns (mental, physical, and emotional) that stand in the way of you living your life with more freedom and happiness.
