Shoulda, coulda, woulda

How many times have you said to yourself (or some version) - Shoulda, coulda, woulda? We all can be great 'Monday morning quarterbacks' when we have a different perspective because it's the day after the game. Distance (i.e. time) helps broaden your perspective while shifting your perception.

What if there's something you can do in that moment to shift those thoughts and feelings that fuel a "bad" habit such as smoking, eating too much, making unhealthy food choices, or biting your nails?

Do you want to Shoulda, coulda, woulda again or do something different?

Here are 3 things to immediately shift your thoughts and therefore, what you're doing:

1.  When you have the thought of doing or tempted by the 'bad' habit or find yourself already engaged in it, STOP for a moment and take a deep breath followed by 3 quick ones.

2.  Stand up, if you can, hop on one leg and then the other. If you're unable to do that make a face, then another. In other words do something different than you have been doing.
What you're doing here is shifting the heavy energy you've been experiencing and lightening it up so you don't go down the rabbit hole into the reaction pattern you've been stuck in - that 'bad' habit.
3.  Once the weight of what you had been thinking passes you can stop
steps 1 & 2. Notice how better you feel and how your thoughts have changed.
Congratulations, you've just short circuited your thought pattern that led to the 'bad' habit allowing you to be a Monday morning quarterback giving you a different perception and an alternative to what you had been doing!
Here's to being your own quarterback!
